What Is the Difference Between THC and CBD and What Are The Health Benefits of Each

Marijuana is slowly being legalized worldwide as more and more people are becoming of the many benefits it offers. With this growing legalization, there is also an increasing number of people who are curious about the plant and its components. Perhaps, two of the most well-known cannabis components are CBD and THC.

CBD stands for cannabidiol, while THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol. Both are natural compounds which are found in cannabis, but they are very different from each other. Below, we discuss the differences between the two:

·THC is psychoactive, CBD is not

The first and most prominent difference is that while THC is the main psychoactive compound found in cannabis, meaning that it is because of this compound that you have that “high” feeling when you consume cannabis. It interacts with your body in such a way that it alters your state of mind by binding itself with your endocannabinoid receptors in your brain. On the other hand, CBD is not psychoactive at all. It only has tons of benefits for users, which is why it is often extracted from the hemp plant to produce oils, gels, supplements and more that help the human body and mind.

·Both have great health benefits, but CBD is often the better choice because it is non-psychoactive

Both CBD and THC have many similar health benefits. However, since CBD does not have any psychoactive components, it is a more preferred and common option or treating various health issues. Epidiolex, which is the first medication containing CBD was even approved by the FDA in June 2018.

CBD is great for treating inflammation, seizures, nausea, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, migraines, anxiety and depression among other diseases. This is mainly because of how it interacts with our body. As mentioned before, THC binds itself with the endocannabinoid receptors in the brain. On the other hand, CBD is not concentrated only in the brain but instead is distributed throughout our nervous system, with a heavy concentration in the spleen. Because of this, and also because of its non-psychoactive nature, CBD is great for treating various health issues.

·CBD is more tolerable than THC and is less likely to cause side effects

Since CBD has many health benefits and is non-psychoactive, it is highly unlikely that you will experience side effects after consuming it in any form. Research suggests that if you do experience side effects, it’s probably a result of other drugs you consume interacting with CBD. On the contrary, THC causes certain side effects such as dry mouth, increased heart rate, red eyes, drowsiness, coordination problems, etc.
